AARC Membership Classifications state
Active Members are those practitioners actively involved in the respiratory care profession. An individual is eligible if he/she lives in the U.S. or its territories, and meets ONE of the following criteria:
- is legally credentialed as a respiratory care professional if employed in a state that mandates such, OR
- is a graduate of an accredited educational program in respiratory care, OR
- holds a credential issued by the NBRC
- Active Members in good standing shall be entitled to all the rights and privileges of membership of the Association, including the right to hold office, hold committee chairs, and vote.

NYSSRC By-Laws state
Article VI, Section B: Nominations
- Only active members and life members of the AARC in good standing shall be eligible for nomination.
- The Nominations Committee shall provide a pertinent biographical sketch of each nominee’s professional activities and services to the organization, all of which shall be part of the ballot.

The officially approved policies and procedures of the AARC and NYSSRC state that 3 of the offices have specific minimum requirements as noted below:
President-Elect
Minimum Requirements:
- Must be an active member of the AARC
- Must have served on the Board of Directors of the NYSSRC for at least two years within the past six years
- Must have demonstrated timely and effective communication skills and the resources to maintain them
- Must have demonstrated ability to appropriately conduct a business meeting
- Must have ability to analyze and respond to various situations, have knowledge of Society’s missions and policies, have knowledge about duties of Society’s committees and demonstrated effective leadership by managing multiple projects.
Preferred Characteristics:
- Should have a history of active participation in his/her chapter or in another chartered affiliate, preferably as President
- Should have served on one or more NYSSRC committees. Preferably should have served as chair of one or more NYSSRC committees
- Should have prior experience on the Executive Committee of the Society
Delegate
Minimum Requirements:
- Must be an active member of the AARC
- Must have served as a member of the NYSSRC Board of Directors for at least four of the six years preceding election to the Delegate position
Regional Director
Minimum Requirements:
- Must be an active member of the AARC
- Must be a member of the Region to which they serve. Membership in the Region shall be determined by place of employment or as specified by the member.

President-Elect
Term: 2 years as President-Elect then moves into the President position.
Specific Duties
- The President-elect shall become acting President and shall assume the duties of the President in the event of the President’s absence, resignation, or disability, and shall perform such other duties as shall be assigned by the President or Board of Directors.
- Prepares the annual budget, with the assistance of the Budget and Audit Committee and submits the budget for approval at the fall meeting of the Board of Directors.
Vice-President
Term: 2 years
Specific Duties
- The Vice-President shall be a member of the Bylaws, Publications, Public Relations, and Society Affairs Committee.
- The Vice-President shall assume the duties but not the office of the President-Elect in the event of the President-Elect’s absence, resignation, or disability.
- Maintains, updates and distributes the Society calendar of events on a regular and timely basis.
- Shall perform such other duties as assigned by the President or Board of Directors.
Treasurer
Term: 2 years
Specific Duties
- The Treasurer shall have charge of all funds and securities of the Society, endorsing checks, notes, or other orders for payment of bills, disbursing funds as authorized by the Board of Directors and/or in accordance with the adopted budget, depositing funds as the Board of Directors may designate.
- (S)he shall see that full and accurate accounts are kept and make a written financial report at every regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Directors.
- At the expense of the Society, (s)he shall be bonded in an amount determined by the Board of Directors.
- (S)he shall, with the President, be responsible for disbursement of all Society funds.
- Receives information from each Region and incorporates this information into Society financial reports.
- Maintains society accounts for review by external audit or delegates this function with BOD approval.
- Assists the President-Elect with preparation of the annual budget.
Secretary
Term: 2 years
Specific Duties
- The Secretary shall have charge of keeping the minutes of the Board of Directors meetings, regular business meetings, and the annual business meeting, submitting a copy of the minutes of every meeting of the governing body and other business of the Society to the executive office of the AARC within ten (10) days following the meeting at which they are approved.
- Executing the general correspondence.
- Maintains policy and procedure manual.
- In general, performing all duties as assigned by the President or Board of Directors.
Delegate
Term: 4 years
Specific Duties
- The duties of the Delegates shall be as specified in the bylaws of the AARC and the policies and procedures of the House of Delegates (HOD).
- Attends the HOD meetings and submits a written report following each meeting to the Board of Directors.
- Receives all HOD resolutions and distribute them to the Board of Directors for input.
Regional Director
Term: 4 years
Specific Duties
- Represent the region from which they are elected.
- Submit a written report at least ten (10) days prior to each Board of Directors meeting, relating to the activities in the region.
- Each region shall be encouraged to expand the membership of the Society and to develop educational activities and such other activities as is consistent with the Articles of Incorporation of these Bylaws.

President
Term: 2 years as President then moves into the Past President position.
Specific Duties
- The President shall be the chief executive officer of the Society.
- (S)he shall preside at the annual business meeting and all meetings of the Board of Directors, prepare an agenda for the annual business meeting, and submit it to the membership not fewer than thirty (30) days prior to such a meeting in accordance with Article 8 of these bylaws
- Prepare an agenda for each meeting of the Board of Directors and submit it to the members of the Board not fewer than fifteen (15) days prior to such meeting.
- Appoint standing and special committees subject to approval of the Board of Directors.
- Appoint a chair to the Nominations and Elections Committee at the annual meeting.
- Be an Ex-Officio Member of all committees except the Nominations and Elections Committee.
- Present to the Board of Directors and membership an annual report of the Society’s activities.
- Inform the President-Elect and Vice President of all the Society’s activities.
- (S)he may be the third member of the Delegation to the AARC House of Delegates.
- (S)he shall, with the Treasurer, be responsible for disbursement of all Society funds.
- Assures that all Society committees and representatives fulfill their obligations as stated in the Bylaws and the Association’s goals and objectives. This includes regular reports and communications, redirecting Society resources as permitted, and replacing committee members and representatives in the best interest of the Society.
- Oversee the performance of the Society Directors and Officers to assure that their duties are fulfilled, that conflicts of interest are disclosed, and those Association resources are available to support these responsibilities to the extent permitted.
- Make personal presentations before key groups, including state and federal government representatives, other professional organizations, and any others which may assist in the Mission of the society. This may include delivery of written and verbal testimony, travel on Society business, audio-visually assisted speeches and interviews with news and other media.
- Reviews the financial, membership and other management information reports and assures that appropriate action is taken.
- Assures that communication among the Board of Directors, Medical Director and Medical Advisors is effective and that issues are resolved to meet the Society’s mission.
- Represents the Society to all external organizations as deemed appropriate.
Past-President
Term: 1 year
Specific Duties
- The Past President will maintain and update the strategic plan and shall perform such other duties as assigned by the President or the Board of Directors.

The Nominations and Elections Committee is charged with reviewing each nomination to determine eligibility & verify that the person accepts the nomination. They will reach out to the nominee for any clarifications.
After nominations close a member of the Nominations and Elections Committee will reach out to verify information that you do or do not accept the nomination and collect candidate biographical information. The Nominations and Elections Committee will present a proposed slate of candidates to the Board of Directors on November 7, 2025. Once the slate is approved the Nominations and Elections Committee share details with NYSSRC members inclusive of candidate biographical information and how/where to vote.
Voting will be online beginning on December 1, 2025, and closing December 31, 2025. After voting closes the Nominations and Elections Committee with follow society policies and procedures to verify results of the election, communicate the results to each candidate, and share the outcome with the membership.
Candidates winning their election will attend an online New BOD Member Orientation in February / March and be officially installed in their new roles at the Annual Business Meeting April 16 and 17, 2026.
