July 2024 update – The committee met with Assemblywoman Patricia Fahy’s legislative representatives to discuss the movement of the bill towards a Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy.
The Borough of Manhattan Community College Advisory Board were supportive, especially with the new language of the bill.
In 1992, New York recognized respiratory therapy as a licensed profession. To keep up with advancements in medical care, legislation is being pursued to require respiratory therapists to hold a bachelor’s degree, ensuring they are well-prepared to manage complex cardiac and pulmonary disorders and improve patient outcomes.
May update from the Ad Hoc Team is advancing the academic requirements for RTs. This supports their significant role in managing complex cardiopulmonary disorders and aligns with current medical advancements.
